Queen of clubs trumps record

SELKIRK'S first lady of golf may make a return to the international circuit after smashing her own course record.
Martine Pow took to The Hill on Sunday for the final medal competition of the season with one goal in mind.
She teed up as usual, thinking nothing of her birdie at the first which is commonplace.
However, little did she realise that three hours later she would be standing over a putt to break her own course record.
This she duly did to break her existing record of 64 by two shots, carding a stupendous 62, 30 shots out and 32 coming in.
Martine told The Wee Paper: "That was my last goal and I'm chuffed to bits to have finally achieved it.
"I have been trying all season and have come close a couple of times, but for one reason or another it all went pear-shaped.
Sunday was perfect. It was a wee bit windy, but that didn't bother me too much and my last drive left me on the 18th green with a six-foot putt and two shots left in which to break the record. I never ever thought I would get a 62."
With Martine every step of the way was Ev Rafferty, who encouraged the Selkirk No1 on the way back in.
Martine recalled: "We got to the 12th and I suddenly realised Ev had stopped breathing. It was really funny. Because I haven't been playing and practicing much in the last year I get a bit more nervous, so I had to tell Ev she would have to start breathing again so she could talk me round the rest of the course – she was great."
Needless to say with her +2 handicap, this score was enough to win Martine the medal in the silver division.
But it also made her think about the future. The 42-year-old retired from the international scene last year, having taken the Scottish Amateur title in May 2006 on her first attempt.
Selkirk's golf legend thought she had reached the peak of her career and wanted to concentrate more on the family business, Xela Scaffolding.
Since breaking her own course record, however, Martine, who is Borders selector for the Scottish Ladies squad, admitted that she was tempted to make a return.
"It was my best score ever and that was without practicing. I have had a busy year with work and my selection duties so I don't know if I would have time to go back to playing at an international level, but I am certainly going to have a good think about it over the winter, and will make a decision in March."
Also last Sunday Marjorie Rae was not to be outdone in the bronze division as she kept her record of wins going to win her fifth medal of the season, returning 103 (31) nett 72. Alison Rutherford won the scratch with a 78.
Just to round off a fabulous morning's work, Martine was the only recipient of the twos money, managing two.
The ladies would like to congratulate Martine on her record-breaking effort and also thank Heatherlie Garage for their sponsorship.
