Experience triumphed as a young Selkirk side was destroyed by St Boswells at The Green on Saturday.
Under threatening clouds, the visitors batted first, but openers David Gardener and Alex Massie fell early to easy catches, leaving plenty of work to be done further down the order.

Greg Fenton enjoyed partnerships of 18 and 19 with Neil Gentleman and Kyle Gillie respectively, the latter topping his side's scorecard with 16 before being bowled by Craig McNeil. Darren Fenton added 11, eventually caught by Glover from a Hunter delivery, leaving Selkirk on 59 for 6.

The lower order batsmen ultimately proved no match for St Boswells bowlers McNeil and Elliot Hunter who destroyed any hopes the visitors had, taking four wickets each – Hunter finishing the innings with 4 for 12.

The Souters' total of 71 was a relatively easy target for the home side to reach, but Selkirk should have made them work harder for it. Lee Oliver took the only wicket of the innings, dismissing Jamie Glover for 10.

On-form opener Steven Broom stuck it out unchallenged to hit eight fours and two sixes for a total of 62, with Rich Young adding a deuce to take St Boswells to 76 in under 10 overs with the loss of just one wicket. Having been simply outplayed, Selkirk will hope to front a stronger side in tomorrow's (Saturday) home fixture against Melrose.

Last weekend, the reserves took on Melrose at Philiphaugh in the Border Reserve League on Sunday, enjoying a better result in a well-fought contest that went to the wire.

Selkirk took to the crease first and, spurred on by Greg Fenton, who hit an impressive 53, fell just short of the ton – all out for 97.

After the break, Melrose fought hard to catch up, but some tight fielding from the home side saw the visitors off for 94 in a nail-biting finish to the day.
