YOUNG Angus Hinnigan sits in the saddle flanked by Royal Burgh Standard Bearer Guy Blair, writes Bob Burgess.
Angus is one of 10 Selkirk children born in the millennium year who have been given free lessons courtesy of the Ex-Standard Bearers' Association.

They have been tutored at the Dryden Riding Centre as part of a scheme announced by the Ex-Standard Bearers in the build-up to this year's Common Riding.

Association chairman David Anderson told The Wee Paper: "We have been trying to find ways to invest in the future of Selkirk Common Riding, and by running this scheme in conjunction with Dryden Riding Centre, we have been able to give these young children an introduction to the fun that horse riding can offer.

"Income for the scheme came from our Appointment Night concert and the dance which followed."

Each child had four free half-hour lessons, and most have gone on to book further tuition. Many took along their brothers and sisters.

If cash allows, the Ex-Standard Bearers hope to repeat the scheme next year with children born in 2001.
